Hacker Lab - The Threequel

This partnered event started when two of our board members, Kevin Cowan and Anne-Marie Rucker connected at a 2nd Thursday mixer.  They liked the idea of an alternative to the regular 2nd Thursday at a bar or a corporate event.

The first event was certainly alternative - a bit more “shark tank” than our Hacker Lab friends preferred.  Our second event involved consulting with entrepreneurs who had taken just one class in the Start-up Hustle.

Our upcoming event will build on what worked:  mixing entrepreneurs with our OEMBA network, serving 2nd Thursday refreshments and offering facilitated consulting.

This time we are reaching out to entrepreneurs who have had some time to think through and practice their elevator pitches and will have breakout facilitators to guide each table into deep dive consulting.  Remember the teamwork in your EMBA cohort?  This is a chance to practice those skills and encourage early stage entrepreneurs.  Join us!

Here is a useful video to view that will help introduce you to a tool Kris Jensen shared with Hacker Lab: Business Model Canvas

Stephanie Francis Has Your Career Hookup

Stephanie Francis, Biz Graduate Career Services Center

Stephanie Francis, Biz Graduate Career Services Center

Stephanie Francis earned her MBA out of state, but is back in Sacramento, directing the Graduate Career and Development Center.  Her MBA concentration in Marketing and background in business and program development prepared her to serve. Stephanie explains: “Before I came to Sac State I had been doing business development at the small business development center at Los Rios Community College district and private consulting.  The opportunity to work on campus in a career center seemed like a perfect way to take all my education and experience in business and working with people and put it into the cause of helping our students reach their career goals was perfect.”

While the priority is graduate students, Stephanie’s team responds to the local business community which needs both undergrad and grad students.  They also support recruiting into the MBA program and the EMBA program.  Mentoring opportunities are part of the mix as well.  “I’ve taken the initiative to mentor students across campus…I just came from a meeting with business students who are affiliated with the Martin Luther King Center and helped them develop some programming around career development and mentoring.”

“Helping student alumni recognize and highlight their value and successfully connecting them with job or career opportunities is my favorite part of my job. Most recently, I have enjoyed matching MBA students with nonprofits who can benefit from their expertise through the MBA Impact Consulting Program.” - Stephanie Francis – Biz Graduate Career Services Center

Biz Graduate Career Services goal is to develop the tools and resources needed for both students and alumni to reach their career goals. Career goals can be diverse – from getting a promotion to changing careers to getting a new job, starting a business, or getting into a graduate level program.   See the offerings available to you as EMBA alumni and connect. “I look forward to seeing the new you emerge, and to you accelerating your career!”
